How do you apply for Social Security Disability or SSI - How to file

Generally, you have three choices available to you when you wish to file for disability. You can go to ssa.gov and from there, if you feel brave enough, you can apply for social security disability or ssi disability benefits online.

Your second choice is to head down to either a social security field office or district office (from your perspective, there's no practical difference between the two--you simply go to whatever office is closest to you) and become a "walk-in". Claims reps, the social security employees who are charged with taking disability applications, are actually assigned specific days of the week in which to take walk-in applicants (Hopefully, the CR who takes walk-ins on the day you choose to walk-in will be in a good mood, but there's no guarantee regarding this).

And then there is your third choice, which may be your better choice. Using this option, you simply call your social security office and inform them of your desire to file an application for disability benefits. Typically, at that point, you will be given the opportunity to schedule a date for an interview to be conducted down at the social security office, or, perhaps more convenientyly for you, over the phone.
