The Governor and the UFO

I think one of the most interesting sightings of a UFO is the video footage of the lights that appeared over Phoenix, Arizona a few years ago. At the time, the governor of that state, Fife Symington, went so far as to ridicule the sighting. Now, several years out of office, he admits to having seen the phenomenon himself and further states his belief that the UFO in this particular sighting was of extraterrestrial origin. Why did the governor attempt to debunk the whole thing at the time? Political considerations. And to that I'd have to agree that a sitting governor might be committing political suicide by publicly going on record about a UFO sighting.
